CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
After recording for nearly a decade with 80’s alt-rock band THE CALL and working with heavy weights like Bono, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, and SIMPLE MINDS, I learned, first hand, the power of melody and lyric. Much of the music we created for THE CALL was deeply spiritual and addressed complexities of life other than falling in love, falling out of love, and holding hands. We always wanted to touch people through our music and inspire hope and compassion. Having co-written one of our biggest hits, I STILL BELIEVE, I was consistently moved by the interaction of our fans at our concerts when we performed this song as it seemed to create an intense connection between all of us in the room. I saw this on an even larger scale between Peter Gabriel and his fans. It was abundantly clear that music inspired a powerful emotion in people when it spoke to their hearts. The music mattered.
When I left the band in 1991 to raise a family, I drifted into writing and producing media music for major entertainment studios and networks in Los Angeles. I’ve been doing it ever since. Recently, it began to weigh on me that my efforts were aspiring to move people to buy more beer, watch a certain network, or go see a “block buster” movie. And that is why I was so happy when Shari Safley called one day in 2005.
Shari hired me to compose and record music for a video she had been licensed to produce. When we finished the production, we continued to work on other projects and presentations, and I saw something exciting taking place. Shari described for me her new model for the nationwide business, One Special Dream, a professional video production service offering families personalized movies with a team of professional artists in the media and literary fields - a unique way for people to preserve their most cherished memories and share them with their loved ones.
“Would you be interested,” she asked, “in over seeing the music end of the operation?” I think I said “yes” before she even finished asking the question.
I knew I had made a good decision when I met Shari’s recent clients. Whether it was a tribute to a loved one who had passed or a celebration of a new life just beginning, these people could not have been more appreciative of the power of the emotional connection captured in their presentations. The right music with their images created a powerful and moving story. They all commented on how great it was to offer something entertaining and inspiring for their gatherings. Another bonus was the value of the video as a gift to all who were either in the movie or at the party. It was clearly a great way to say “thank you” and share the magic of the moment forever.
I am excited to be a part of a new company that is dedicated to creating timeless keepsakes for families and helping them to build a lasting archive of their family history that will sustain itself through every new generation. Finally, the music matters again. Hallelujah!
